HSHSRI Backyard Composting Giveaway

The Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas Rhode Island (HSHSRI) team will host two compost bin and equipment giveaways on April 6th and 13th from 12PM to 3PM for HSHSRI backyard composting program participants.

Note you must be a HSHSRI participant to attend the giveaway event. 

HSHSRI program participants are also required to attend one of the two backyard composting workshops before taking home their bins (workshops held on March 27th and April 10th)

The giveaway event is a great opportunity for program participants to touch base with the HSHSRI project team and ask any and all follow-up questions about the composting process from techniques and tips to helpful resources and tools.

HSHSRI Backyard Composting Workshop

The Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas Rhode Island (HSHSRI) project team will hold two backyard composting workshops for all HSHSRI participants hosted by Aquidneck Community Table at the Clean Ocean Access office on March 27th and April 10th.

Residents looking to start backyard composting must sign up for HSHSRI either before or during one of the workshop events.

The workshop aims to teach individuals the art and science of composting, different composting techniques and technologies, proper management for speedy decomposition, and the practical use of the end soil amendment. This user-friendly, hands-on workshop is meant to answer any and all questions about the composting process.

New composters signing up through HSHSRI will have a choice between two backyard composting systems and will be supplied with Stu Campbell’s, Let it Rot! The Gardner’s Guide to Composting all provided at a reduced subsidy value.

HSHSRI backyard composters also have the opportunity to get involved in valuable metrics of waste diversion from the Central Landfill. Interested participants will be supplied with a kitchen compost bin and a citizen science data collection kit.

RI Compost Conference & Trade Show

Clean Ocean Access is proud to participate in the annual RI Compost Conference & Trade Show sponsored by the Environmental Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) and the Rhode Island College Office of Sustainability.

This is a full day conference featuring a slate of speakers from our developing RI Composting Industry and from around the country is planned. The Trade Show will feature organizations and businesses, including Filtrex, The Center For Eco Technology, The Compost Depot at Frye Florist, Foodscape, Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, RI Department of Environmental Management, Bootstrap Compost. Groundwork RI. Listening Tree Co-op, and Rhodeside Revival, and more!

In addition to speakers from many of these organizations there will be a plenary panel on managing food scrap in schools and workshops on the exciting happenings in Providence and Aquidneck Island.
