Ocean Science Speaker Series #3
January 8 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PMFREE
Clean Ocean Access continues the Ocean Science Speaker Series in 2019, featuring scientists and researchers across disciplines, ranging from marine biology and engineering to marine affairs and pharmaceutical sciences.
Our third speaker, Hilary Ranson, is a fourth year PhD candidate at the University of Rhode Island’s College of Pharmacy pursuing doctoral studies in medicinal chemistry. She will present on her research studying bacterial natural products and drug discovery with a focus on finding potential probiotic bacteria within marine systems and their application to disease prevention in the aquaculture industry.
The presentation will be followed by COA’s monthly open meeting with exciting updates on our projects and programs.
Hilary holds a bachelor’s in marine biology from Newcastle University (UK). She later joined the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she worked as a research assistant for four years developing a pipeline for drug discovery from marine bacteria and studying the diverse chemical interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton in the oceans. Hilary came to the University of Rhode Island in 2015 to pursue her PhD in medicinal chemistry. Her research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms for host-bacteria and bacteria-bacteria interactions with a special emphasis is on probiotic bacteria that provide disease resistance to marine shellfish and crustaceans.
