Algal Blooms

Summer weather is finally here! Along with the warmth comes the possibility of greenish looking waters with floating clumps of algae on the surface. This is a sign of “algae blooms”, caused by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) when there’s a temperature increase,  slow moving water, or an excessive input of nutrients. These bacteria produce toxins that can be harmful to you or pets if ingested or through direct exposure to skin. If you notice an algal bloom in your area, it is important to avoid swimming, fishing or boating to limit contact with the affected water until the bloom dissipates or is removed.
