During fall, 2016, the Newport Harbor Trash Skimmers (NHTS) removed 1,338 pieces of plastic from Newport Harbor. This plastic has likely been introduced to the environment years ago, and has broken down into smaller pieces of plastic that are now being removed from the harbor.

Plastic breaks down, but never fully degrades. As it floats in the ocean, it is mistaken for food and ingested by animals and marine wildlife.

It is up to us to make conscious decisions to reduce, reuse, and recycle. So, what can you do to reduce plastic in your everyday routine? Share your ideas and stay tuned for simple ways to improve ocean health.
